In July 2010, at the time of the Tour de France, The Big Issue published My Father’s Bicycle. Australianrules.com.au had published a shorter version of the story a few years back but the re-write benefited, not surprisingly, from talking to some of my father’s mates.
Here’s an excerpt from The Big Issue version of the story (edition 358):
Dad was no Cadel Evans. Or Lance Armstrong. Not that he ever claimed to be anything of the sort. I don’t recall him ever talking about his cycling days. Some things matter more to the son than to the father.
